One of the meanings of sunflowers is 「あこがれ」akogare “admiration, adoration, aspiration”. Because of this, it’s a popular gift for Father’s Day in Japan... Apropos of that, please look closely at the left part of the drawing...
Sunflowers also have many romantic connotations:
「あなたは素晴らしい」anata wa subarashii = “you are wonderful”
「あなただけを見つめる」anata dake o mitsumeru = “I only have eyes for you”
The number of sunflowers also affects the meaning.
A few examples (but there are many more!):
🌻11 sunflowers: 最愛 saiai = “beloved”
🌻99 sunflowers: 「永遠の愛」、「ずっと一緒にいよう」 eien no ai, zutto isshou ni iyou = “eternal love”, “let’s always be together”
🌻Interestingly, 999 sunflowers mean 「何度生まれ変わってもあなたを愛します」nando umarekawattemo anata o aishimasu = “no matter how many times we’re reborn, I’ll always love you”. Of course, a picture can’t possibly contain 999 flowers… but since they’re in a field of sunflowers, you can use your imagination…

Periwinkle’s JP name is ツルニチニチソウ tsurunichinichisou. The name seems to come from the fact that it’s a vine (tsuru) and it blooms flowers every day (nichinichi).
